Every framer knows these moments. Here's how the same conversation sounds without a design language, and with one.

With the book

The Corner Sample Wall

Every frame shop has one: a wall of mouldings, cut and joined at the corner, waiting for someone to choose. It is easy to choose from it by color, width, and price. This book shows you how to read it instead — to see where a profile comes from, how it behaves, and what it will say about the artwork inside it. Once you can read the wall, it stops being a wall of choices and becomes a vocabulary.

A long gallery lined floor to ceiling with picture frame corner samples

Inside the book

Hundreds of visual examples combined with the design principles behind them. Not just what a moulding looks like, but why it works.

  • How mouldings communicateProportion, motif, form, finish and craftsmanship: the vocabulary behind every profile.
  • How the eye moves through artAnd how the right frame completes that journey rather than interrupting it.
  • Texture, finish and materialFrom gilding and lacquer to shagreen, strié and hammered metal.
  • Period styles and mat scienceThe history behind frame forms, and practical frameworks for everyday design decisions.

    How the book was made

A Note from the Author on AI and the Images

The knowledge in this book is mine, built over more than forty years in custom framing and from studying mouldings in person around the world. The close-up moulding photographs were taken by me in galleries, palaces, temples, churches, and museums. I used AI in limited ways: to create illustrations for ideas that can't be photographed, to keep contrast consistent across my motif library, to help check historical facts, and to proofread for grammar, spelling, and layout. The descriptions, the classifications, and the ideas are my own.

    Questions before you order

Still deciding? Here's what framers usually ask.

Is it for beginners or experienced framers?

Both. Newer framers get the vocabulary and a framework for making design decisions. Experienced framers get precise language for what they already sense, and a shared standard for training staff. It's written as a reference you'll return to throughout your career.

    Which edition should I choose?

The softcover (333 pages) carries the complete core text. The hardcover (363 pages) is the most complete edition: it adds 30 pages of expanded history and background, The Deep, an advanced exploration of frame design, and the Pacitti Periodic Table of Picture Frame Design.

Can I get it shipped to my country?

If you are registered with Amazon in your country, Amazon should ship to you. Delivery options are shown at checkout on Amazon.ca and Amazon.com.

    What does the book cover?

Book One explores the fundamental design principles that guide successful custom picture framing. It introduces framers to the visual language of mouldings through their historical influences, classifications, motifs, patterns, and surface characteristics. By examining the relationship between architectural styles, furniture design, decorative periods, and contemporary trends, the book establishes a practical approach to understanding moulding design. Central to this approach are the three Design Drivers—Motif, Pattern, and Surface—which help framers recognize the visual characteristics of a moulding and how they relate to artwork. Supported by extensive illustrations and framing examples, the book provides a foundation for making informed, confident, and purposeful design decisions.

Can Michael teach my team or speak at our event?
